I’m writing this blog post as I sit in first class (thanks to Mr. CD’s miles) en route to PDX for Sock Summit. I’m glad to be up here away from all the screaming and unhappy babies in the main cabin of the plane. The plane is small so I can still hear them loud and clear (and the 1st class seats aren’t the same as if you were flying in much larger plane). I imagine that if I sat next to them, I may suffer temporary deafness. It’s hard to sympathize for the kids and the parents when the kids scream bloody murder waaay before the plane even begins to taxi the runway, especially on a 7 a.m. flight.
Behind me is a 13 year old kid traveling by himself and Ppmpous Man who can’t stop talking. (Kid lucked out – got upgraded to 1st because he’s too young for the emergency exit row.) Pompous Man loudly offers unsolicited tidbits about his experiences as a Lt Col or something in the military and how he used to fly helicopters, traveled to X country, etc., back in the 80s. He even keeps photos of military stuff with him and is showing the kid now! Who carries 20+ years-old photos around? Wtf? Re-living the glory days, no doubt.
Pompous Man also tried to be cool and talked about the show Jackass and the “midget” in the show. He then segued into other insensitive and assholey things about “midgets” and said in a righteous tone, “Be glad that we were born normal and non-defective. Be glad.” Seriously?!? Little people are not aliens. They are people that may have conditions which may make it hard for them to function in a society of much taller people and have some medical issues, but they are people and are not freaks of nature!
I really don’t want to listen to the dude nor the screaming babies, so I looked for my iPod. I remembered to pack it, but in my ultimate brilliance, I forgot my headphones! Argh. Now I have not choice but to listen to them. (Can you tell that I have my crankypants on? Even so, I think I’d still find them annoying without them) Anyway, I can’t wait until I arrive. I’m gonna work more on my Sock Summit sweater, which is still quite dismal in progress, I don’t think I even have 5 inches. I think I fix dropped stitches more than making actual progress.
More later about the actual Sock Summit!
