Warning: There are ugly and scary looking allergy-eye photos in this post!
Ugh. I am not a huge complainer (at least I hope not), but this allergy thing has been driving me batty and I am feeling like the whiniest, saddest and most frustrated and unpleasant person to be around. I generally have a high tolerance for pain and discomfort and have suffered allergies at various levels my whole life, but this is seriously the worst that it has been. It has totally affected my ability to sleep and function on all levels. My poor hubby has had to put up with all the grouchiness and complaining.
My eyes are watery, irritated and swollen so much so that my ability to see or read, let alone concentrate has been greatly affected. My doctor has tried me on a bunch of drugs, sprays and eyedrops, one of which I could only use for 7 days because of risk of going blind! One of the eyedrops that we tried is a teeeeeeny tiny bottle of Pataday, which is still $40 copay with insurance!! (My normal copay is $10.) Well, I just realized that I have some sort of allergy to Pataday, which makes what’s already bad worse! Also because of the constant watering, the skin around my eyes has totally dried and cracked, and I’ve developed some eczema around the eyes. The worst part is that there’s nothing that’s not very harmful that I can put around my eyes to help alleviate the irritation and drynesss, except applying lotion like every 20 minutes, and trying not to get lotion in my eyeball.
Needless to say, this has also impacted my creative knitting and design juices. Usually my ideas are abound and overflowing. Now they are stuck and backed up like an old sewer pipe.
The good news is that I was finally approved for a referral to an allergist, who initially could not squeeze me in until December 11! But after calling, crying and pestering them with my desperation I now have an appointment for next week. I really hope getting allergy shots will help — I don’t even care if they want to give me a shot everyday. I don’t know how they are going to test me further though, because as I understand, allergists usually do scratch tests for allergies, but you have to be off allergy medications, which as you can see from the photos, that’s me while medicated. Initial blood tests have shown that I have a litany of environmental allergies.
